Being able to rent a car and drive out to my Anaheim Convention Center hotel was a nice diversion from my normal travel routine. An average trip segment for me usually sees me driving to PHX (which is smart since I live in the greater Phoenix area ) I have a long term parking place that is great, inexpensive and shuttles me to the airport.

Obviously we all know the trials and tribulations of navigating airport security in our now (mostly) familiar post 9/11 world of airline travel. Once on the plane however, I usually have a few moments to just relax, contemplate the sales efforts just completed, and focus on the next stop of the journey.

It’s usually during these times that I try and share some thoughts about the wonderful and exciting world of business travel. Okay, that last statement might be stretching it a bit. But I do my best to share the good, the bad, and what I’d only be able to consider my little insightful observations.

My time in Anaheim was so busy that I was completely unable to spare even a few moments to share some of those observations. Now, however, after dropping off the car and settling in for the flight to Denver I’ve relaxed and am feeling insightful. A nice airline cocktail can often have that affect. Don’t worry, I’m not going to expense that one!

The other day I spoke about L.A. becoming the set for Blade Runner. Being able to drive from LAX down to Anaheim and back a few days later really just confirmed that they are going to start building straight up before long!

As we cruise towards Denver and I’m finishing up this post I find myself reflecting on the changes that I get to see as I revisit the various metropolitan areas around our country. Usually the changes are subtle. I building gone from here; a new one over there. Roads are widened, but rarely narrowed. A different restaurant in the space that I ate last time I was here. That sort of thing.

So, off to Denver to discover the changes, additions, subtractions. After 5 or so days there, back to the California life with a stop in San Francisco. Sure hope Sam Wo’s is still there!

1. The Great Thing About Saturday Travel

Back from having my favorite dish ever: Duck Chow Fun at Sam Wo’s. Did I mention how much I liked that place? Anyway, now that my belly’s full (and some leftovers for later. Yeah!) I’m settling into my SFO airport hotel room. These are the times, these very moments, that I love the most about traveling.

In fact, I feel like listing out a few more of my favorite travel moments:

1. Getting to eat at my favorite restaurants (Go to Sam Wo’s!)
2. Seeing old friends when I’m in their city or town
3. Making the sale. Big time!
4. Being able to take in a local boxing match (that you can’t see on television)
5. Coming back home safe and sound!

And there are many more things I truly enjoy about being on the road. Of course, being single may have a lot to do with not having concerns about so long away from home. If I had a spouse and/or children, I suppose I’d want to be there spending as much time with them as I could.

Fortunately (for me anyway) I don’t have those liabilities. And while I am a little envious of my friends that have built wonderful families, I’m not that jealous. Besides, I have several (hundred, it seems at the family holiday table) cousins, nieces, nephews, and assorted other half pint types that I can “rent” anytime I decide to spend time with kids.

It works out for everyone involved: I get quality time with the kids when I want it. Their parents get some quality time with themselves. And the kids have a blast. Usually. Especially when ice cream is involved. Usually

LOL! I had mentioned how much I was hoping to get to my favorite Chinese, Sam Wo once I had gotten settled in after landing in San Francisco. That link to their site is actually somewhat hilarious because it’s sooo much like the restaurant. There’s really nothing there at the site. But when I was searching for the actual address (to be able to give to the cabbie) I came across this hilarious, short Youtube clip that Conan O’Brien shot about Sam Wo’s.

Decent game last night. At this point with all the moving around, I really don’t find myself connected to any one team. As I might have mentioned previously, I tend to enjoy the competition of the college game more than NFL, so I’ve not become emotionally attached to any of them.

Just like watching good plays. The drama of it all. How bad decisions affect the outcome; that sort of thing. There were a couple of like minded fans of the sport hanging out in the lounge of the downtown Denver hotel, where I was staying.

And then there were a few, FANS! Or I guess the true word is fanatic for these guys and gals. LOL! It was actually exactly what I was trying to tell you when I talked about how important it is to me to find accommodations that, well, accommodate me the way I wish to be taken care of.

As you can (hopefully!) tell, I didn’t have too many beers while watching the game. During the heavy duty traveling, it just doesn’t serve me well to indulge. Hmmm, maybe I’ll do a future post about the concept of living on the road like I live at home. I do think about it a ton since a large percentage of my time is actually spent in the traveling process.

We’ll see. For now it’s off to sleep. In the early a.m. I’ll be heading to the airport and out to San Francisco. I’m really going to try and get over to my favorite Chinese restaurant in China Town, Sam Wo’s. Complete, classic hole in the wall place. In fact, you walk in off the street through the kitchen!

There are two additional levels for dining. The best is always the top, 3rd floor. Completely irreverent wait staff that have tons of fun with the customers. Have to make it for dinner!
